Woodbrook Pentecostal Church - Ambassadors for
Christ Steel Orchestra
Established in 1996 with a humble beginning of six members, the Woodbrook Pentecostal Church Steel Orchestra, known as the Ambassadors for Christ, has grown to a dynamic group of fifteen. From its inception, Mr. Ronald Alexis has been the dedicated Arranger, playing a pivotal role in its musical success and growth. The instruments are tuned by the skilled hands of Mr. Andy Neils.
The inspiration for the orchestra came from its former captain, Mr. Leslie Rudder, and the unwavering encouragement of the late pastor, Reverend Turnel Joshua Nelson, whose vision extended beyond the local church to create a ministry that would spread the word of God far and wide. Today, the orchestra is led by Mrs. Rachael Davis and continues to be supported by current church leaders, Bishop Osbert Williams, Reverend Angela Williams, and Reverend Joycelyn Nelson. Staying true to its name, the mission of the Ambassadors for Christ is to utilise music on the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, to share the word of God and take messages of faith and hope to the local congregation, to churches and communities across the nation, to the Caribbean region and further afield.
In the year 2000, the orchestra expanded its outreach by engaging in missionary work throughout Trinidad. The band’s commitment to this mission led to regional outreach, including two significant trips to Guyana in 2002 and 2015. Its missionary efforts, particularly around Christmas time, included the Missions 500 initiative, where the orchestra shared the message of Christ, the joy of the season and distributed gifts and hampers to children and families in underserved communities such as Rampanalgas, Mayaro, La Seiva, and La Fillette.
Although the orchestra faced challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, that resulted in the pause of some of its missionary activities, it remains active, ministering at a wide range of events, including church services, weddings, various luncheons, birthday celebrations and more. In 2027 its first international mission will be held which is themed, Evangelism on Steel: Mission Uganda. On this mission, the band will spend over two weeks ministering on the streets, in prisons and in churches of Kenya and Uganda.
In 2025, with a key focus of the orchestra being succession planning and ensuring the ministry’s longevity through the mentoring of junior members, a children’s band was initiated. The junior band with children all under the age of eight, ensures the next generation of pan players and that the message of Christ through the music on the national instrument, lives on.
